Lisa Mascaro of the Las Vegas Sun reported the story of how Representative Shelley Berkley (D-NV) came to advocate for bone density testing.
Berkley was diagnosed with osteoporosis by her future husband (who happens to be a doctor) when they first began dating. According to Mascaro, Representative Berkley explained that "the doctor suggested during a date that they stop by his office. Once there, he wanted her try out a new machine."
Berkely took his offer, had a bone density test and found out that she had osteoporosis and needed to be on medication.
Representative Berkely is one of the sponsors of the amendment to provide funding for bone density testing in the House health care bill. Despite her efforts, the House rejected the amendment.
There still may be time to add your voice to the debate. The current reductions in bone density testing reimbursement is causing many facilities to close their doors, limiting access for patients. Contact your representative and tell your story.
