FDA Warns About Vitamin D Droppers for Infants
Thursday, 17 June 2010 10:36
The FDA is warning parents to take care when using droppers to give vitamin D to babies. There is concern that the markings on the droppers are not clear enough and that may lead to parents accidentally giving their infants more vitamin D than recommended.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants who are breast fed not receive more than 400 IU of vitamin D per day.
Excessive intake of vitamin D in infants could lead to kidney damage. Other possible effects include vomiting; loss of appetite; excessive thirst; frequent urination; abdominal, muscle, and joint pain; and fatigue.
The FDA is also asking manufacturers to clearly mark droppers and is suggesting that products made for infants contain droppers that only hold the recommended dose.
